KELSO'S Choice (K-2)

KELSO'S Choice is a conflict management skills program that teaches students positive ways to deal with difficult situations. Students in grades K-2 are taught the difference between major problems (ones that are dangerous or could hurt another person) and minor problems. They are taught to ask a trusted adult for help with all major problems. Students who have minor conflicts with their peers are asked to try at least two of the following strategies before asking a trusted adult for help:

1. Go to another game or activity

2. Share and take turns

3. Respectfully talk it over and listen to each other

4. Walk away from the problem

5. Ignore the problem behavior

6. Tell the person to stop the problem behavior

7. Apologize

8. Make a deal or compromise

9. Wait to cool off

By using Kelso's Choices, we believe that all students will develop effective problem-solving skills that they can use now and in the future. These skills can help students deal with conflict in a positive manner and make appropriate decisions when it comes to conflict with their peers. We encourage all parents/guardians to become familiar with this program so that together, we can develop a healthy life skill for all our students.
